A sample built on fictional content. Whitlow Ferris Partners is not a real firm and this reflects no real engagement.

A readout is due Wednesday. Watch the skeleton become a reviewed deck.

Whitlow Ferris Partners is a fictional management consulting firm working for private-equity portfolio companies. It runs on Microsoft 365: the playbook and the deliverable templates live in the WFP Knowledge library on SharePoint, each engagement has a folder in the Engagements library beside it, and the firm’s method and positions have been organized and approved. The deliverable assembler builds the skeleton of a readout from the playbook module and the engagement’s own data extracts, the engagement manager edits it, and the engagement partner reviews it before it is presented. Each step below is the screen a real person would be looking at.

What it is worth

The value in this workflow is how much of a readout changes inside the last forty-eight hours before it is presented, and how long an engagement manager spends assembling the skeleton before the analysis starts. At this firm, nine of the twenty-six readouts in the past year had three or more slides changed inside the last forty-eight hours, which is the reason the partner review rule exists. We would measure both on your own readouts. The diagnosis measured proposal development and not this workflow, so we do not put a number on it.

2:24The assembler watches the engagement channel from inside the firm’s Microsoft 365 tenant. It read Jen’s request, opened the ENG-2611 folder in the Engagements library, took the slide structure from PB-100 modules 4 and 6 and the sponsor format from SP-2, and built the outline against the extracts in the folder. Nine minutes after the request, the skeleton is waiting on SharePoint.

Checks · plain code, run when the outline was assembled

✓ PassedDL-6. Every number on the twelve slides traces to a file and a version in ENG-2611 › Data, and every recommendation names its module. Read from the extracts, not remembered.
✓ PassedSP-2. The deck opens on the value bridge and carries the deal team’s three KPIs on page two, the order Larkspur Ridge asked for.
✓ PassedPB-100 v4 and DT-R. The slide structure follows the approved playbook version and the readout template. The older PB-100 copies are marked superseded and were not read.
⚑ FlagInventory days moved with the extract. Slide 6 and the KPI page use BF_inventory_count_Aug_v2.xlsx, 71 days, which the week-two readout used. A v3 arrived from Beltline on September 15 and reads 67 days. Both are shown; Jen decides which one the committee sees.
⚑ FlagDays payable moved with the extract. The week-two readout used BF_AP_terms_v3.xlsx, 41 days. David posted v4 today with the cleaned vendor list, and it reads 44 days. The outline uses v4 and shows both; Jen confirms.
⚑ FlagQA-1: no partner review is on the calendar. The committee is Wednesday, September 23, at 9:00, so the review has to happen by Monday at 9:00 on the version that will be presented. An invite to Marcus Delgado is drafted for Jen to send.

FLAG 1 · DECIDEDJen kept the v2 inventory count. Her reason, recorded on the slide: the v3 recount leaves out consigned stock and has not been tied to the general ledger, and the committee saw 71 days in week two. The inventory slide keeps 71 days and carries a footnote on the recount.
FLAG 2 · DECIDEDJen took the v4 payables extract. The vendor list in it is the one procurement cleaned up this week, and 44 days is the figure the sprint is working against. The KPI page and the payables slide now cite v4.
EDITS · RECORDEDProcurement moved ahead of payables, because the sourcing-wave timing is the decision the committee is being asked to make. The ten largest past-due accounts came out; the committee saw that list in week two, and the collections slide carries what changed. Twelve slides became eleven, saved as version 3.
NOTE · TO MARCUS“Marcus, the bridge still uses the v2 count and the v3 recount is in the footnote on slide 5. Say if you want the committee to see both.” Attached to the review invite.
QA-1 · SCHEDULEDThe committee is Wednesday at 9:00. The review is Monday, September 21, at 9:00, on version 3, the version that will be presented. The invite below is drafted, and Jen sends it.
The edits do not vanish into this one deck. Both version decisions and their reasons are recorded against ENG-2611, and the slide order Jen chose is logged for Marcus to confirm as a Larkspur Ridge preference under SP-2.
✓ Sent by Jen Halvorsen, 2:58. Version 3 is the review version, and Marcus Delgado’s QA-1 review is on his calendar for Monday, September 21, at 9:00.

Marcus, this is the QA-1 review of the Beltline steering committee readout, version 3, the version for Wednesday’s 9:00 committee. The deck is in the ENG-2611 folder. Two extract versions changed since week two; my decisions on both are on the engagement page with the reasons. One thing I want your read on: the bridge still uses the v2 inventory count and the v3 recount is in the footnote on slide 5. Say if you want the committee to see both.

2:58Jen owns the deck. She decided both flags, moved two slides, cut one, and left a note for Marcus, and each decision is recorded with its reason. The partner review went on Marcus’s calendar for Monday morning, forty-eight hours ahead of the committee, on the version he will be reviewing. The software assembled the outline, and the people decided what is presented.

Keep v2 on the bridge. The footnote reads fine. Add one line on when finance ties the recount to the GL so Dan doesn’t ask. Good to present.

Added. Finance ties it out by the 30th; the line is on slide 5.

Mon 9:35This is the deck Marcus reviewed on Monday morning, in the slide sorter: the value bridge first, the three KPIs second, and a source line in every footer. His one comment sits on the inventory slide, and Jen answered it by ten. The deck goes to the committee on Wednesday at 9:00 with that line added and nothing else changed after the review.

What runs it

The deliverable assembler is software configured in the firm’s own Microsoft 365 tenant. It reads the WFP Knowledge library and the engagement folder under the permissions the firm already set. Nothing about this workflow leaves their environment.
The model drafts; code checks. Language models read the request, choose the slides from the module structure, and write the slide titles and the source lines. Whether every number has an extract behind it (DL-6), whether the deck opens the way Larkspur Ridge asked (SP-2), and whether the partner review is on the calendar forty-eight hours ahead (QA-1) run as plain code, so a check either passes or a person looks at it.

Where the knowledge lives

The playbook and the template are PB-100 v4 and DT-R on SharePoint, each with an owner, Priya Raman. The older copies of PB-100 are marked superseded, so the assembler reads one version and says which.
The extracts stay in the engagement folder, which is already where the team keeps them. The assembler reads them there and puts the file name and version on every number, so a changed version shows up as a flag before the deck is built.

What gets recorded

Every version decision, edit, and review comment is logged, with who decided and when. The reason for keeping the v2 count is on the engagement record, and the slide order Jen chose is queued for Marcus to confirm as a Larkspur Ridge preference, so the memory got better because the readout was built.

This is the whole machine. Three places the knowledge already lives, one piece of software inside the tenant, checks that are code, flags that go to the engagement manager, and a partner reviewing every readout before it is presented.

What this took, in this fictional world

The skeleton was on SharePoint nine minutes after Jen asked, with the module and the extract named on every slide and the two numbers that had moved flagged before anyone built a chart. Jen spent her afternoon on the decisions, and the partner review went on the calendar the same day. Before the software, an engagement manager built the skeleton from the last readout she could find, and the source of a number was whatever the analyst remembered.

The same workflow, elsewhere

At a law firm, this is the board memo or the closing summary assembled from the matter file, each statement citing the document it rests on. At an accounting firm, it is the audit committee deck built from the workpapers, with every figure tied to its schedule. At an architecture practice, it is the design review package built from the current drawing set, with the sheet and revision on every page. The pattern is the same: assembled from what the firm already has, every number showing its source, a person editing and a partner reviewing.
